If you want garden romance, this is your spot. Nathanael Greene Park — also known as Close Memorial Park — spans over 100 acres in the heart of Springfield and is home to the Springfield Botanical Gardens. With manicured rose gardens, winding stone pathways, open meadows, wooded trails, and water features, it offers more variety in a single session than almost anywhere else in the city.
This is one of my most-booked locations, and for good reason. It works beautifully in every season, at golden hour or on a soft overcast evening, for couples who want something lush and romantic without feeling overly formal.
Best for: Garden romance, variety seekers, couples who want a timeless and elegant feel.
Good to know: There is a photography permit fee to shoot here, so plan accordingly and check with the park office ahead of your session.
I recently photographed an engagement session here and wrote an entire post about it — [read it here.]
For the couple who wants something a little more editorial — Hotel Vandivort is it. Originally built in 1906 as a Masonic Temple and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the hotel sits in the heart of downtown Springfield and is one of the most visually stunning buildings in the city. Think exposed brick, soaring ceilings up to 21 feet, rich textures, moody hallways, and the iconic Vantage Rooftop Lounge overlooking the Springfield skyline.
Sessions here feel like a fashion editorial. The architecture does so much of the work — and the variety of settings within a single building means we can move through completely different looks without ever stepping outside.
Best for: Upscale, editorial, fashion-forward couples. Perfect for those who want something indoors or semi-indoors, or who love a more architectural, moody aesthetic.
Good to know: Reach out to the hotel in advance to confirm photography logistics and any requirements for shooting on their property.
If your love story belongs outdoors — really outdoors — Fellows Lake is one of the most breathtaking spots near Springfield. Located just north of the city, this 860-acre lake is surrounded by rolling hills, open fields, forested trails, and 27 miles of shoreline. The variety of scenery here is incredible: golden meadows, wooded paths, waterfront views, and some of the best sunset light I’ve ever seen in the Ozarks.
Sessions at Fellows Lake feel expansive and cinematic. There’s room to roam, room to breathe, and room to let the landscape wrap around your story.
Best for: Outdoorsy couples, nature lovers, anyone who wants that wide-open Ozarks feel. Also stunning for fall sessions when the foliage is at peak color.
Good to know: Commercial photography at Fellows Lake requires a permit. I handle this as part of our session planning, but it’s worth knowing ahead of time.
Downtown Springfield has a warmth and texture that doesn’t get nearly enough credit as an engagement session backdrop. We’re talking exposed brick walls, hand-painted murals, historic storefronts, cozy coffee shops with the most beautiful window light, and quiet streets that feel like a small city with a big soul.
This is the kind of session that feels less like a photoshoot and more like a date. We grab coffee, we wander, we let the light find us. The urban environment keeps things relaxed and natural — and the resulting images have a lifestyle quality that’s effortlessly cool.
Best for: Laid-back, lifestyle-oriented couples. Coffee lovers. Couples who feel more at ease moving and doing rather than posing. Also great in winter when outdoor sessions feel less appealing.
Good to know: Early morning or weekday evenings tend to have quieter streets and softer light — both of which make for better photos.
Just outside of Springfield, Finley Farms is one of the most beloved engagement and wedding session locations in the Ozarks — and once you’ve seen it, it’s easy to understand why. Rolling hills, open fields, rustic barns, and wide open skies come together in a way that’s genuinely stunning at golden hour. The farm is intentionally designed with photographers in mind, and that thoughtfulness shows in every frame.
This is the quintessential Ozarks engagement session — earthy, romantic, and beautiful in the most natural way. If you love the idea of wide open spaces and warm, golden light wrapping around you as the sun goes down, Finley Farms will not disappoint.
Best for: Rustic, earthy, romantic couples. Golden hour lovers. Couples getting married at a venue with a similar feel who want their engagement session to match the vibe.
Good to know: Finley Farms books up, especially in fall. If this is your dream location, plan ahead and book your session early in the season.
This one doesn’t get talked about enough — but shooting your engagement session at your actual wedding venue is one of the most strategically smart things you can do, and it’s something I love offering my wedding clients.
Here’s why it works so well: you get comfortable in the space before your wedding day. You learn where the light falls. You discover your favorite corners and backdrops. And by the time your wedding day arrives, the venue already feels familiar — which means you feel more relaxed, more at home, and more yourselves.
As a bonus, the photos themselves are gorgeous. Venues are designed to be beautiful, and an evening engagement session there — without the full wedding day schedule — gives us time to explore every inch of it.
If you’re a Katey Sutton Photo wedding client, ask me about adding this to your package. I love making it happen.
