If the thought of your engagement session makes you even a little nervous — you’re completely normal. Most couples have never been professionally photographed together before, and showing up to a session feeling unsure of what to do, how to pose, or whether you’ll even like the photos is one of the most common things I hear.
Here’s what I want you to know before anything else: your engagement session is not a test. There’s no wrong way to do it. And by the end, most couples tell me it was way more fun than they expected.
As an engagement and wedding photographer based in Marshfield, MO, here’s exactly what you can expect from start to finish.
Before your session, we’ll talk through location options based on your style, your vision, and what kind of images you want to walk away with. Whether that’s a lush garden, a lakeside at golden hour, the streets of downtown Springfield, or a rustic farm — the location sets the tone for everything, so it’s worth thinking about intentionally.
If you’re not sure where to start, I’m always happy to make recommendations based on your aesthetic and the season. That’s part of the process.
Outfits are one of the most important things to think through ahead of time. Coordinated tones, textures, and colors that complement your location will make a real difference in how cohesive and timeless your photos look. If you need guidance here, I have a full style guide to help — [read it here.]
Almost every couple feels some version of nerves before their session. It’s natural. What I’ve found is that the nerves almost always disappear within the first ten to fifteen minutes once we start moving, talking, and laughing. You don’t need to arrive feeling confident — you just need to arrive.
There’s no jumping straight into intense posing the moment you get out of the car. We’ll walk, talk, get comfortable in the space together, and let things unfold naturally. Think of the first few minutes as a warm-up — for you and for me.
This is probably the biggest fear couples have going in, and I want to address it directly: you don’t need to know anything about posing. That’s my job. I’ll give you gentle direction throughout — sometimes specific guidance, sometimes just prompts that get you moving and interacting naturally. The goal is never to make you look like a mannequin. It’s to capture you the way you actually are together.
Rather than standing in one spot and grinding through poses, we’ll move. We’ll explore different areas of the location, shift the light, change the backgrounds, and keep the energy flowing. Movement keeps things feeling natural and gives your gallery real variety.
Some of the session will involve light direction from me — where to stand, how to angle toward each other, a specific moment to lean in. But some of the best images come from the in-between moments: the laugh after a joke, the look you give each other when you think the camera isn’t watching, the quiet moment when you forget we’re even doing a photoshoot.
I’m always watching for those. They’re usually my favorites.
Around the halfway point of most sessions, something shifts. Couples stop thinking about the camera and start just being with each other. That’s the sweet spot — and it’s where the most beautiful, real images come from. Trust the process and know that it gets easier as you go.
If you’ve planned two looks, we’ll find a natural transition point mid-session to switch. Having a change of clothes nearby — ideally in the car — keeps things moving smoothly. Two outfits give your gallery more variety and let different sides of your relationship shine through.
Your complete, edited gallery will be delivered within approximately one week of your session. Every image is individually edited with care — and that quick turnaround means you won’t be waiting long to share and relive the whole thing.
Save-the-dates, your wedding website, social media announcements, holiday cards, wall art — engagement photos have a longer life than most couples anticipate. Beyond the practical uses, they’re also a record of this exact season of your relationship. A year from now, you’ll be glad you have them.
Arrive on time — or a little early. Feeling rushed going into a session shows up in the photos. Give yourself buffer time to get there, take a breath, and get settled.
Put your phones away. Once we start, resist the urge to check your phone or look at the back of the camera. Stay present with each other — that presence is exactly what makes photos feel alive.
Talk to each other. Whisper something. Tell a joke. Bring up an inside reference that makes your partner laugh. The more you’re genuinely connecting rather than performing, the better your images will be.
Trust your photographer. You hired someone whose work you love. Let them lead. The couples who relax into the process and trust the direction always walk away with the most beautiful galleries.
I’d love to be your photographer. I serve couples across the Ozarks — Springfield, Marshfield, Nixa, Ozark, Republic, Rogersville, and beyond. If you’re ready to start planning or just have questions about what a session looks like, reach out anytime.
