As a family photographer based in Marshfield, MO, I’ve shot across this region in every season. But fall? Fall is something else entirely. Here are a few of my favorite locations for fall family photos in and around Springfield — all chosen specifically for their incredible fall foliage and the kind of light that makes images feel warm, rich, and timeless.
1. Fellows Lake — Springfield, MO
Fellows Lake is one of the most breathtaking fall photography locations in the entire Springfield area — and honestly, it’s criminally underrated. Located just north of the city, this 860-acre lake is surrounded by rolling hills, open meadows, wooded trails, and 27 miles of shoreline. In fall, the surrounding tree line explodes with color — warm reds, burnt oranges, and deep golds reflecting off the water in a way that is genuinely stunning.
The variety of scenery here is what makes it so special for families. Wide open fields for that expansive, cinematic look. Tree-lined paths for something more intimate and enclosed. Lakeside spots for reflections and that soft, glowing evening light. You can move through completely different feels within a single session.
Golden hour at Fellows Lake in October is something every family should experience at least once.
Best for: Families who love the outdoors, wide open spaces, and that rich, warm Ozarks fall palette. Stunning for extended families who need room to spread out.

2. Ha Ha Tonka State Park — Camdenton, MO
Ha Ha Tonka is worth the drive. Located about an hour north of Springfield near the Lake of the Ozarks, this 3,700-acre state park is one of Missouri’s most dramatic and visually stunning locations — and in fall, it becomes something almost otherworldly.
The park’s most iconic feature is the ruins of an early 20th century stone mansion perched high on a bluff overlooking the lake — a backdrop so cinematic it almost doesn’t feel real. Surrounding those ruins, the Ozark hillsides turn spectacular shades of red, orange, and gold as fall peaks. Add the bluffs, the natural bridge, the spring-fed waters, and the winding trails, and you have a location that produces images unlike anywhere else in Missouri.
Fall foliage at Ha Ha Tonka typically peaks in October, making it ideal for sessions booked in that window. Sessions here tend to feel more like an adventure than a photoshoot — which is exactly why the images are so alive.
Best for: Adventurous families, extended family sessions, anyone who wants something truly dramatic and different. Also incredible for couples who want engagement photos with serious wow factor.

Good to know: The trails involve some elevation and uneven terrain — sturdy shoes are a must, especially for little ones.
3. Springfield Conservation Nature Center — Springfield, MO
Tucked away in southeast Springfield, the Conservation Nature Center is one of the city’s best kept secrets for fall photography. Over three miles of peaceful trails wind through a landscape where forests, prairies, and wetlands meet — and in fall, those woodlands turn golden in a way that feels quiet, intimate, and completely removed from the city around them.
What I love about this location for family sessions is the atmosphere. It feels unhurried. There’s no traffic noise, no crowds competing for space, just trails, trees, and that gorgeous diffused fall light filtering through the canopy. For families with young kids especially, the gentle, walkable paths make it easy to move through the session without anyone getting overwhelmed.
The Nature Center is also free and open to the public — which is always a plus.
Best for: Families with young children, families who want something peaceful and woodsy, anyone who loves that soft, golden-light-through-the-trees look.
Peak fall color: Mid to late October.
Good to know: The Nature Center does not allow pets on the trails, so leave the family dog at home for this one. The trail system is open daily — hours vary seasonally so check ahead before your session.
When to Book Your Fall Family Session
Fall books faster than any other season — and for good reason. Everyone wants those golden October photos. If you’re hoping for a peak October session, reach out sooner rather than later. A few spots may still be available but they won’t last long.
Peak fall color in the Springfield and Ozarks area typically falls in the third to final week of October — so that window fills up first. September sessions are also beautiful, with softer greens transitioning to early color and less competition for dates.
Pro tip: Morning and evening sessions in fall have the best light — that warm, low golden hour glow that wraps everything in amber. Midday fall sessions can still be beautiful, but if you have flexibility, lean toward the edges of the day.
