You just got engaged — congratulations! Now comes the part where everyone has an opinion about what you should do first. Book the venue. Pick a date. Find a dress. Start a Pinterest board. The advice is endless.
But here’s something that often gets pushed too far down the list: booking your wedding photographer. And in Missouri — especially in the Ozarks — waiting too long can mean losing the photographer you actually want.
Here’s everything you need to know about timing your photographer search so you don’t end up scrambling.
For most couples planning a wedding in Missouri, booking your photographer 10 to 12 months before your wedding date is the sweet spot. This gives you enough lead time to research photographers whose work genuinely resonates with you, have a real conversation before committing, and secure your date before someone else does.
For peak season weddings — think fall, late spring, and early summer — booking even earlier is smart. The best photographers in the Ozarks fill their most popular dates fast, and October Saturdays in particular can be gone a year or more out.
Unlike a caterer who can serve multiple events in a weekend or a florist who can take on several weddings in a day, your photographer can only be in one place at one time. One wedding, one date, done. That single-booking model means availability is genuinely limited — especially for photographers who are selective about how many weddings they take on per year.
Add in the fact that engaged couples tend to cluster around the same popular dates and seasons, and you start to see why waiting until six months out — or less — can leave you with limited options.
Not all dates are created equal. In Missouri, the most in-demand wedding months are:
Fall (September – November): The most requested season by far. The foliage, the light, the comfortable temperatures — couples plan their weddings around it. October Saturdays book up fastest and earliest. If you’re planning a fall wedding, treat your photographer search with urgency.
Late Spring (May – June): A close second. The weather is beautiful, venues are lush, and the days are long. Popular dates fill up quickly.
Summer (July – August): Slightly less competitive but still busy. Heat can be a factor for outdoor ceremonies, but couples who embrace it have plenty of beautiful date options.
Winter and early spring tend to have more availability — which is one of the many reasons an off-season wedding can be a smart move if flexibility matters to you.
Waiting isn’t the end of the world, but it does narrow your options. Here’s what late booking typically looks like:
6 months out: You may still find great photographers available, but popular dates — especially fall Saturdays — are often already gone. You’ll be choosing from what’s left rather than who you actually want.
3–4 months out: Options are significantly more limited. You may find photographers with availability, but it’s less likely to be someone whose work you’ve been following and dreaming about.
Less than 3 months out: This is last-minute territory. It’s not impossible to find someone good, but you’re working against yourself. The stress alone isn’t worth it.
The couples who end up most disappointed are almost always the ones who fell in love with a photographer’s work, waited too long to reach out, and found that their date was already taken.
The Ozarks has a particularly competitive wedding market in fall. The combination of stunning foliage, iconic venues, and picture-perfect weather creates a window that every couple wants — and every photographer’s calendar reflects that. If your heart is set on an October wedding at a popular Ozarks venue, reaching out to your photographer within weeks of setting your date is not an overreaction. It’s the smart move.
Start researching early. Even before you have a date locked in, start looking at photographers whose work speaks to you. Follow them on Instagram, browse their full galleries, and get a feel for their style and personality.
Reach out before you’re ready. A lot of photographers — myself included — are happy to have an initial conversation even before a date is fully confirmed. Finding out if you connect with someone is worth doing early.
Ask about availability first. Before you fall too hard for any photographer’s work, confirm they’re available on your date. It saves heartbreak later.
Read the contract carefully. Once you’re ready to move forward, make sure you understand what’s included, what the payment schedule looks like, and what happens in the event of an emergency. A clear contract protects everyone.
Book with a retainer. Your date isn’t held until a retainer is paid and a contract is signed. A verbal “I want to book you” doesn’t secure anything — follow through quickly once you’ve made your decision.
If you’re planning a Missouri or Ozarks wedding and photography matters to you — and it should, because it’s the only thing you’ll have left when the day is over — don’t let it be an afterthought. Start your search early, reach out to photographers whose work you love, and secure your date before someone else does.
The couples who book early get their first choice. It’s really that simple.
